Manhattan, 5:50AM.

After 12 months of planning to see the eclipse in Texas, we made a last-minute pivot to Northern Vermont in hopes of clear skies and totality.

We saw many friends, skied some fresh spring powder(!), experienced totality 8 miles from the Canadian border — and then got caught in an eeeepic traffic jam.

3.5 minutes was totally worth 27 hours of driving!

For a photographer who’s afraid of heights, I was still pretty hesitant to first pick up a drone. Once I realized how this tool would afford me a pretty great opportunity to record aerial footage, I chose to see what it was all about.

It’s been an adjustment for me, to be honest. Not as much from the technical or creative side, but in terms of its impact on my surroundings. When using the drone, I put a lot of thought into how, when and where to fly, and choose to do so in a calculated manor out of respect to the people, places and wildlife nearby.

With that in consideration, and while I had the opportunity to spend time in almost every U.S. state in the past two years, I was able to create some fun footage from some special places I visited where flying caused minimal impact on my surroundings.

Earlier this week I woke up early and decided to try and get in a hike before the afternoon monsoonal thunderstorms came.

I chose Lake of the Crags, which starts at String Lake and climbs over 3,000 ft in about 4 miles, straight up the eastern-facing slopes of Grand Teton National Park.

I basically stair-climbed for 4 miles up a slope with sections that would be considered a 5.3 scramble (is that a thing?!), to an elevation of 9,565 ft.

I made it up and down before the storms came and even had time to relax in the hammock, ass totally kicked from the typical zero-to-a-thousand steepness of the Tetons, before moving on to find a campsite for the night. 😵

Earlier this week I did a solo 20-mile overnight into the backcountry of Grand Teton National Park. Although this was technically a downhill loop, there was around 2,500’ of climbing and roughly 5,000’ of descent over the two days (which translates to: Legs =🔥)

The trek started at 10,450’ at the top of @jacksonhole resort, and the first 6.5 miles are spent hiking to Marion Lake, a tiny subalpine lake along the Teton Crest Trail. After a quick stop for lunch I began the descent through Upper and Lower Granite Canyon.

I made a comfortable camp next to Granite Creek for the night, and as I filtered water the following morning, was visited by (only) one of the three bears I saw along the hike. It wasn’t aggressive, just curious- and can confirm, slightly more invigorating than coffee. 😲⚡️☕️
